At The Helm Marine, The Best Major Service & Repair Center

Annual Service
It is important to service and maintain you boats drive train by making sure your service intervals outlined in your owners manual are followed. To make it simple At the Helm Marine recommends the following yearly maintenance schedule: Every 50 hours or 12 months which ever occurs first you should have the oil changed at the bare minimum this will help maintain proper lubrication to ensure the integrity of your engines life. There are many different applications and service requirements are different for each of them. If you follow service by date you can use 1st year engine and transmission (Weather v-drive,direct drive, or stern drive often called 20 hour service) 2nd year engine only service(all fluids and filters including stern drive gear oil often called 50hour service) then in the 3rd year have the engine, transmission and tune up (spark plugs, cap and rotor often called 100 hour service) performed. At the Helm Marine recognizes the difference between boats so a generic flat rate service is not the same as some of the competitors like to believe. A mercruiser alpha is not the same as a OMC cobra. Our services are broken down to be boat make and engine model specific. At the Helm Marine wants to ensure your boat is getting what it needs when it needs it at a price applicable to your boat. Check out what lines we service and see what is recommended on your boat.
Sea water pump impeller
One of the most vital organs in your boat power plant!  Like service for you engine the water pump impeller can vary in size, shape, and accessibility. This component draws water in from the sea or lake to keep the engine at proper running temperature. The boat does not have a radiator to keep coolant so it uses the water your boating in for that purpose. Even closed cooling engines still use sea water to keep the coolant at the proper temperature. The components has no real guarantee on how long it will last. Often times failure can occur from debris blocking the water intake or starting the boat out of the water with out a flush kit running water to the intake. The impeller is rubber so it can also fail from lack of use. It needs water to stay lubricated also the housing it sits in is oblong and can cause the impeller to develop a seat last the rubber can begin to dry rot and crack this combination can lead to the impeller blades tearing of the base and ending up in you cooling system. Your owners manual will outline what interval is best for your impeller replacement. At the Helm Marine recommends replacement of this component every year. Time on the water is valuable and having an over heat condition can ruin your day of fun.
Trailer Service
Getting to and from you boating destination relies heavily on your boat trailer. At the Helm Marine provides a 4 point basic service included in your annual engine service(checking tire pressure, brake fluid, lights and greasing the bearings thru the zirc fitting). Making sure your wheel bearings and axle spindles are in good condition every  3-5 yars is important. This can be accomplished by having a bearing repack performed at any time. Brake systems also need inspection by pulling off the trailer wheels and checking pad or shue integrity. Water contamination can enter the brake system catching this early can help prevent costly repairs to master cylinders and brake lines. At the Helm Marine offers full repair and maintenance on boat trailers.
Power Management for 12 volt systems
Many boaters today have invested in an elabrate and impressive stereo system, lights and other accessories. A large part of boating is cove time where we can anchor off shut down the engine, crank up the tunes and  enjoy some swimming, leisure or our favorite party time! A lot of us boaters can put many more hours on the stereo than our boat. Doing this demands a great deal of power from the batteries. The life of a battery can vary and often times when a stereo in powered up incorrectly it can drain batteries and in some cases leave people stranded with out any amperage to start the engine.  At the Helm Marine specializes in providing proper battery power for your system. A fail safe wiring and switch system so that you are never left without a starting battery. We also have a wide variety of on board charging systems and ways to power them while not near 110 outlets. Most installers don't pay much attention to this aspect of the install. Unlike automotive install there are many other variables to powering a boat properly.  We can help manage this sytem.
